SECURITY CAMERAS

Good morning everyone and welcome to “In the Middle of the Street”, a place to discuss about the real problems on our streets, those that really worry people. Presented by Mike Flewaway (MF), today we are going to talk about security at schools. Should security cameras be installed in all schools? Today, with us, John Levantini (JL), a sociologist specialized in teenagers, and Clive Stuart (CS), a teacher in a conflictive area.
MF: Welcome to our program.

CS: Thank you. It’s a pleasure to be here.

JL: Thank you very much. It is the same pleasure to me.

MF: Then, let’s start. The point is that a lot of parents are worried about the security situation at many schools, and so do students. Is it a good measure to decrease crimes at schools?

JL: No, it is absolutely not. The way I see it is that it would make students develop new ways to commit crimes, for instance, breaking them or doing crimes where cameras can’t see them. So the problem is much bigger than it seems: it’s an educational problem. Parents have to educate and grow their child in the respect. That’s the greatest thing they can do. Also the teachers should...

CS: What do you mean? Are you saying we don’t work properly?

JL: Of course not. I was trying to say that that work at home has to be seconded by school. The base has to be built by parents and the last floors of the skyscraper, by teachers.

CS: I agree in the last part, nevertheless I totally disagree in the first one. While this building you’ve talked about is being built, what should we do? Waiting for someone to enter it and destroying it? Or protecting it? Protecting it, of course. That is what cameras would do; keep an eye on the students to see if they’re going on the right way and let the other students do themselves. If they are good, they have nothing to fear about.

JL: Maybe... But it violates privacy rights! That’s a very bad way to control them. They would rebel to this control. It would be worse.

CS: But in the case that...

MF: Sorry, but last news claim for their prominence. Very important news! That’s live! Thank you very much to both of you. We’ll meet tomorrow again to keep discussing this problem. Remember: In the Middle of the Street, the program to talk about what is really important. See you tomorrow!

MCE RADIO

ENT: Welcome to all of our listeners of MCE RADIO. Today we have two special guests, to talk about a very important topic in the life of a teen.
Well, now a days, the exchange is one of the most famous things that a teen makes during the year, because it’s an incredible experience to know a language, to know a new culture and other things. And we have decided in MCE radio to invite two students of a school in Sant Andreu, to come to the studio to talk about this amazing experience. We welcome to this magnifies students! Welcome guys!

S.1-S.2: Hi!!

ENT: We are really glad that you stay here to talk with us. How are you? How about the school?

S.2: Thank you. The truth is that we have just started the school, we’re going to 2nd of BTX, and we’re really nervous, because this year we have the selectivity, and we have to be 100%, but all is great!

ENT: Ohh… Selectivity, it sounds harsh… Well guys, we would like that both of two say what you think about the exchange with students of another countries.

S.1: I would like to start because I think that exchange is one of the most amazing experiences that you can live. Knowing a language, meeting other people, discovering another culture, it’s so important in the life of teen. And now, that English is the most important language for you to have a job. Now, universities assume that English is already part of your life, and you need a good English for having good studies.

ENT: I totally agree with you! English, now, is a part of our lives, and it’s so important for the workplace. Well, let’s see what thinks the other student!

S.2: Well the truth is that I wouldn’t like to go to an exchange, I prefer to go to an academy or something like this, because staying in another place is difficult, because when you have a problem or an accident, your family isn’t with you, and you have to live with another family that you don’t know. Maybe staying in other country is great, but not for studying, maybe for holidays with your friends…

ENT: Yes, it’s true, but you don’t think in all the experiences that you can live with other people, or having fun with new persons, and knowing other culture?

S.2: Yes…but I think that I can live amazing experiences here, in Barcelona…

ENT: Well, it’s another point of view… Maybe lots of students would like to have an exchange and others maybe no, it depends on the person.

S.1: Yes, it’s true, I think that an exchange can be an amazing experience, but not all people think like me, there are different points of view, but I recommend to all persons that would like to have an exchange that don’t hesitate, you can live the most beautiful experience in your live!

ENT: Okay, after this, we can listen two versions of two different students!
And you, what do you think about have an exchange?
Send us a text message saying what you think about it! Tomorrow we’re going back to interview more persons with different topics of our lives!
Bye guys and thank you for all!

S.1-S.2: Bye, thanks!!!

THE TREE. Marta C. (2n batx A)

THE TREE

I know that I said that I didn’t like this video, maybe because the first time that I saw it, I wasn’t paying attention…sorry Lurdes… The next video I’m going to pay more attention to really!
Okay my impression of this video is strange… The first time that I saw it, I thought that it was an advert of a car! (don’t ask me why, you know who I am)  And after when I saw that a child was trying to take out the tree I thought that it was another advert of something relevant with environment jajaja really don’t ask me why! And to finish when I saw that all of the people that were seeing the child how he takes out the tree and then they went to help him, I thought that maybe it could be a “meditation” that taught us that together we can make more things, we can overcome more obstacles if we stay together!
To get this conclusion I needed to see the video like 3, 4, 5, 6… times, to understand the meaning, I’m not stupid but when you first thinks that is an advert of a car and then another advert of environment, after this you don’t know who think!
Apart from the joke and apart from seeing this video lots of times, I have to say that it’s a very good way to say the people that together we are better, we can overcome all of obstacles (as I said this before) and I think that it’s the real meaning of this video. To make people aware people that when you’re alone okay maybe you can get lots of things, but really, when there are people who help you to get you own wishes is better, they can help you a lot!
It’s a comparison, but when you are in school maybe lot of people don’t see this, but all of the teachers try to help us, to get our  best marks…
It is a strange comparison in my point of view, but nowadays we are in our last year in this school, we have to work really hard, and how to say the meaning of this video, stay together to do better and more things that you can’t alone!
And this is, for me, the meaning of this wonderful, magnificent, great and spectacular video! (It’s not a joke)
I’m waiting for the next video!

SUMMER PICS. Marta C. (2n batx A)

MY SUMMER

Well, it’s difficult to talk about all of my summer, because I have lived lots of experiences with new and old friends.
First of all I would like to talk about my fantastic travel to Malta, It’s a new experience that all of the people have to live, because you learn lots of things. I have to give the reason to my English teacher…Yes, in Malta there is lot of party! It’s true, I think that I learn more how to go to party, but in Malta it’s awesome!!! There is a zone only for pubs, clubs and restaurants of fast food If you are hungry when finishes the night jajajaja, I know this because every night I finished in one restaurant of fast food!!

Apart from my fantastic nights, the rest of the day I was with nice people from lots of countries, Spanish people, of course…, Italians, French, Belgian, from Czech Republic, Chinese… But I had realized that Spanish and Italian are very similar, we love going to party and we are very extroverted, and this is the reason whereby I had met more Italians!
In Malta I visited lots of beautiful places, beaches, and I could meet the Malta’s culture, but not all was good… The weather was horrible, it was hot… horrible hot, and it made lot of moisture!! And apart from the weather, Malta is a dirty place with lots of cockroaches, and I hate this! The truth is that if someone would like to visit Malta…okay go… but only for the party! jajajajaja
Okay, party, friends… But the true reason whereby I talk about Malta is for all of things that I had learned… The first, English, maybe I didn’t learn fantastic English, but tried it, I think that I speak a mmmm…GOOD English! I still can’t talk very very very good, but I understand everything :D !!! The second is that when you live alone without your family, and you have to travel with people that you don’t know, you have to fend for yourself. And I have learned that if you have a bad day, don’t throw the towel! Think that tomorrow will be a better day.

Lurdes, I have to confess that I have thought a lot about you, lots of days that I was in class, I remembered some things that you said to me in English class, and sometimes when I went to a bar to drink something I thought about you, don’t ask me why, because I don’t know, maybe I thought about you in specific moments that saw, listened something that reminds me of you, and for this I have something for you! jajajaja
The worst of Malta was the farewell, I burst into tears when I had to see out the friends that I met, but there are two girls that live in Sant Andreu and are very nice!
Apart from Malta, when I arrived in Barcelona I had a good news… my dentist took away my brackets ¡¡¡ yeaaahhhh !!! And now I stay all the day smilingly!!!
After 5 days in Barcelona I had to leave to my father’s town, because it was the parties and my cousin was getting married! I stayed there for two weeks with all of my father’s family, it’s was awesome! We went to the river, we had lunch together, we had fun! Everything was perfect.
After staying two weeks in the town, Irene said to me that if I wanted to go with her to Can Carbonell, to stay there five-six days! And it was incredible, with Irene always I have fun!
When I arrived in Barcelona and I saw that the summer finished I decided to stay here and wait for the new course.

WRITING DIALOGUES. Judith D. (2n batx B)

SHOULD EVERYONE BE ALLOWED TO CARRY GUNS?

Good night and welcome to CHEER-UP, the best of the best radio programmes! At tonight’s programme we are going to introduce a new discussing topic: Do you think that everybody should be allowed to carry guns if they want to? We are so lucky people because tonight we count with the point of views of two of the most famous young people in America, two of the most beautiful celebrities of the moment, with all of you: Marçal Vegas Novellon and Laura Hendrickx Balaguer! We also want your opinion so phone at 100200123 or give us your opinion on cheer-upfacebook.com we will be glad to know your points of view. Thank you and…. discuss!!
MA: Hello America and thank you Caroline for inviting Laura and me to your radio programme!
LA: Yes! Hello everybody! I think people should be allowed to carry a gun; there would be less crime if no one knew who was caring.
MA: Never. Not everyone should be allowed to carry the gun as there is a danger that this person will use it for bad purposes. How can we feel safe when we know anyone can have a gun and use it against us?
LA: People who commit crimes don't care about laws that prevent them from carrying them; they are going to commit a crime. So when I walk to the street I prefer to know that everybody has a gun because then I will be alert and I can protect myself too.
MA: I don’t agree with you. I don't think they make you any safer because it is more likely to die in a crime committed if there is a gun possessed by the victim. What criminal wants to die? If they know that the victim possessed a gun they are going to do what it takes to survive.
LA: Well yesterday I read an article about how a man who was concealed carrying a gun was able to stop a criminal at a supermarket. So yes people should be allowed to carry guns as long as they are responsible with them.
MA: Probably, sometimes it can be propitious, but it doesn’t depend on the responsibility. Some people obviously need to carry guns, for example policemen and security personnel. The problem is that most people who carry guns have either no proper training to handle a gun. Moreover, a lot of people killed by privately owned hand-guns are members of the family of the gun owner. Great protection indeed!
That’s all for tonight! It’s time to go so thank you Laura and thank you Marçal. We are very grateful to have had you this evening with us. What is clear is that there are too many things to think about before making anything absolute. That’s the conclusion of tonight’s programme come tomorrow and listen the new topic discus. Thank you for your collaboration and good night.

Rumpelstiltskin

Once upon a time,  there was a poor miller who had just one pretty thing; his daughter. One day, the father went to meet the king and to seem important told him that his daughter had the power of spin straw into gold.

The king became surprised for the news and said to the miller to bring his daughter to his palace.

The next day, the girl was brought to the king and took into a room full of straw. He gave her a spinnig-wheel and a reel to spin straw into raw. If she didn't do it for the morning, they would kill her.
Because she didn't know what to do, she began to cry.

In that moment, a little man came to the room and ask her why was she crying.

The girl told him her story and then the little man offered her a pact: if she gave him her necklace, he would spin straw into gold for her.

When the king saw the gold was astonished and really delighted.
He took the girl into an other room full of more straw.
The girl, another time began to cry and the door opened as last day. The miller's daughter gave this time her ring to the little man and he make magic again.

For the morning, the king thought he hadn't enough gold and told to the girl to do it for the last time. If she did it, he would marry her. Because she didn't have anything more she had to promise to the small man to give him her first child when she became queen.

The next day the king get married with her and a year after, the girl had a child.
Days later the little man ordered her to give him her child. The queen offered all she had to him but he refused it and took the baby.
The queen began to lament, so the man pitied her. He gave her three days to find out his name and then she would keep her child.

The queen thought the whole night names and the next day said all of them to the man but no one was correct.
The second day happened the same and the queen was heartbroken.
That night, the messenger of the queen came back to the palace without more new names but with some news: he had seen the little man in the forest singing, dancing and shouting his name, glad to think no one could guess his name; Rumpelstiltskin.
The third day, the queen told to the small man that his name was Rumpelstiltskin.
And finally, after a lot of years, the miller's daughter could live in pace.

The moral of this fairy tale is that you have to be honest, do not be selfish and apreciate what you have.

A MEMORABLE EXPERIENCE. Laia P. (1r batx B)

Mary King's experience

In the ends of July I went to Edinburgh. There, I specially was delighted for the Mary King's close.

The Real Mary Kings close is an underground street placed in the heard of Edinburgh. It was one of the most important closes 400 years ago.

I have just started the tour and It was so dark indoors. The guide presented herself as a character of the stories and went downstairs with a lantern.

First we walked by many chambers and the guide explained us that the close was named Mary King's because she had the most productive business in the close at 1630's.

Next, we went to a room full of bunks and fake people made of plastic of something like this to represent the victims of the plague. As soon as I saw it I became frightened, there was a man (fake) that was wearing a mask as a peak, a complete black dress from head to feed, gloves and a hat. Long time ago it was belived that the plague spread through the birds. Nowadays, It is known that the rats’ fleas were the responsibles of this disease.

Afterwards, we went to "Annie's room". Annie was an abandoned girl who dead in this chamber. There's a story of a Japanese psychic who when tried to leave felt a tug of a ghost hand on her leg. From that day, everybody who know the story bring a stuffed animal for Annie.

When we left the room, I also felt a jerk on my leg, I turned and there was nobody behind me.

After all, sometimes the close is closed to do paranormal investigations and they have find out that Annie's room is always some grades under the rest of her house, they've captured "very faint white or transparent spheres" when were photographing the recreated workshop and they have heard steps in some recordings.

Definitely, there're many mysteries in this close of which have been researching and revealed true stories more astonishing than any fiction.

A MEMORABLE EXPERIENCE. Dani C. (1r batx A)

A memorable experience

If I had to choose a memorable experience I would choose the day I met Joe Bonamassa. Joe is one of the most influential blues guitarists in the world, so I thought I should mention him.

When my mum first told me I was going to see Joe, I couldn’t believe it. Do you know what it’s like to see one of the most awesome guys in your life? Must be something unforgettable, special.

Ok, so when I finally realized that my mum wasn’t fooling me I got ready for the meeting, which took place before the gig, and as a good guitarist I took my guitar for him to sign it. I was over the moon when a first saw him, I was about to burst into tears.

I spent a few minutes talking about guitarist’s stuff and this kind of things. Finally, when I was seeing him off he gave me his set list, a dedication, his pick… God! I couldn’t believe it!

The storyteller

Once upon a time there was a beautiful, good and little princess. She had blue eyes and dark hair, and her skin was very very white. The princess…

- Daddy! Stop it! I don’t like this story. I don’t like the Snow White!
- I don’t like the stories without mothers!
- Jane, darling… it wasn’t the Snow White! And listen, this story is different.

She had never been out of the castle walls, and the worst was that Eilean Donan was unoccupied except by her and her father. This way, she had never played with any friend because she hadn’t known or met anyone.

One day, Mary asked her father if she could go out of the castle and meet new people and make friends, but the father’s answer was so terrifying that she never asked again.

The problem was that every day the little princess was more furious with her father (a natural reaction I think). She decided not to look and not to talk with him, she couldn’t endure his presence. Then, her father became a desperate person.

The time passed and the little princess had become a good teenager. But her father was stricter than before; he didn’t know how to deal her daughter. In consequence Mary hated more and more the actions of her father.

So, when Mary was eighteen years, she prepared her suitcase, she took some food and she wrote a letter to her father that said:

Dear father,
I know you love me and you don’t let me go out because of the death of mummy. But you have to understand that I can’t stay there with you for all the centuries, I have to make my life as you have made yours.
Do you understand me?
Please forgive me. I had already forgiven you for all of our problems.
But you have to promise that you will never follow me, unless it was to give me a big hug of understanding.
I love you

Then she escaped the castle to achieve her dream: going out, making friends and meeting a good and a lovely boy to marry. She finally made her dream reality.

And her father learned the life lesson. He forgave her daughter and he accepted her handsome husband. What else could he do?
-       What do you think Jane?
-       Oh you’re sleeping- the father says quietly.
-       Don’t worry my little princess I would never cut your wings to fly if you do it well.
-       Good night Jane…Sweet dreams.

MORAL: Everyone has to live her life and has to make her decisions. But the most importantly if you make a mistake, learn from him and above all apologize.

A FAIRY TALE. Joan S. (1r batx B)

The land of colours

Once upon a time, in the land of colours, there were three colours. They were Cyan, Magenta and Yellow. They thought about making new colours and they discovered that if they got mixed, they could make new colours. So Blue, Red and Green were created. And like this they continued in lots of generations. Finally, they were hundreds of thousands of billions of tones and hues.

But there were so many colours that they started to identify each other. There were the 233.045.089-RGB[1], the 013.122.001-RGB, and lots of other colours. These two didn’t have any problems because they were very different, but it wasn’t the same between 221.012.200-RGB, 221.012.201-RGB, 221.012.199-RGB and 221.012.202-RGB. These four colours were really confronted for hundreds of years. They fought in rainbow wars, they combated in lots of battles, they tried to poison each other…

However, many many years later, they were tired of so many troubles and warfare. So 221.012.200-RGB asked by a letter to the others to come to an agreement. The letter was something like this:

The proposal went on and the others colours started to follow suit. And they started to make groups of colours. And the war broke off. They started to tell them by words. So appeared colours Scarlet, Vermilion, Tangelo, Orange, Amber, Gold, Apple green, Lime, Pistachio, Harlequin, Emerald, Malachite, Sea green, Aquamarine, Turquoise, Opal, Cerulean, Azure, Cobalt, Sapphire, Indigo, Violet, Purple, Mulberry, Heliotrope, Magenta, Orchid, Cerise, Rose, Raspberry, Crimson, Amaranth... and many more.

But then, because they had seen it had been good, they proved to make new groups like Magenta, Yellow and Cyan. They did it and after, they went together for make a new colour not seen for a while. It was colour white. At first, they liked it, but not many days later, they thought that they had lost their identity. So they required to be divided and they returned to the first groups.

So, you have to remind that you don’t have to lose your identity, but you always will be part of a group. It’s impossible to take everybody into a group, and it mustn’t be. Be into a group in which you can identify, but conserve your identity.

[1] RGB: Red Green and Blue; most common way to identify colour
[2] RG: Red and Green, because they had the same quantity of these colours

WHAT ARE THEY DOING? Gerard F. (3r ESO C)

This image is from the San Fermines, in País Vasco. People run and try to stare a big bull. The people lead it to the bullring. There are lot of people so….sometimes the bull gores someone.
At the left of the image, we can see a man of the red cross society standing at the fence, watching if the bull injuries anyone.

There is also another man with a black short t-shirt that had seen the bull and he's trying to find a place to be able to pass the fence, because he is really scared.
In front of the image there is a man with a black jacket with blue letters, he is running a lot because he knows that the bull is going to gore him.
At the background of the photo there is a man with a red shirt, this color attracts the bulls but as we can see, he is really bost and wants to be really close to the animal and that can lead and upset.
At the right of the image there is a man with a blue scarf, that one is not the traditional scarf but he is now shouting to the people that are round of him, because he cannot escape, so he is complaining.
At the left-background of the image we see two young boys with a grey jacket jumping the fence because they don’t like that situation.
Really in front of the image we don’t see a complete person, we can only see a man with a straw hat laughing because someone has falled in front of him.
This is the situation in San Fermines.

Recycling and environmentalism: a way of life

I think in the society we live in, a society in which consumption is excessive, recycling is very important. To more consumption, more trash, which is detrimental to nature.

In my house we have learned to recycle, but the truth is that we struggled a little. We were not used to. It is easy to throw all the trash in the same place, separate paper, glass, plastic ... was a disaster. The council gave us some bags and buckets to do so, but then, where were getting into this in a small kitchen? Eventually we found the right space, but I must admit that sometimes we were wrong.

Another topic that we carefully consider in my family's using cars. We only use it for my father and because his work is essential. The rest of the family use public transport to get around, even my mother, who works out of Barcelona. He says further that is cleaner, serves relaxation and is useful to read, and do not have time.

Another issue of concern in my family, is the dirt from the beaches. Since the spring starts to almost fall, we're going to the beach, sunbathing, fishing and do diving. It is easy to carry bags to throw papers and cigarettes ashes. It seems impossible for people to be able to leave papers, bottles, cans ... without remorse.

There is only one earth it, must be cared for and respected, because only then can we respect ourselves.

ARE YOU GREEN? Eva R. (1r batx A)

BE GREEN!

Many people wonder why it is important to recycle, and many other people think it's a waste of time. What’s my opinion?

Sometimes we waste, and we forget about the negative impact that it has on the environment. We think that this doesn’t affect on us, but we are wrong. All that relates to the environment, our planet, always has a direct impact on us. Recycling is a simple process that can help us solve many of the problems of pollution and it cost us nothing. We only have to worry about throwing each package in its corresponding trash, and try to use public transport, bicycle or walk to where you want to go.

There are several benefits for recycling: less garbage is thrown in public places and produce less greenhouse gases; it use less renewable natural resources such as water and trees; it saves huge amounts of non-renewable natural resources such as oil and other, etc.

On the economic side, we can say that recycling can generate many jobs. It’s necessary to collect the materials for recycling and for its classification.

In summary, it is easy to recycle and worth the effort. Everyone should contribute to make a better world and less polluted. Where renewable energies were the only ones we use.

EVA ROMERO
1r BATX A

ARE YOU GREEN? Silvia V. (1r batx B)

Are you conscious of your actions?

Since years ago many green associations have been worried about recycling. They said that the developed countries consumed and wasted too much glass, too much paper and too much plastic.

I have to say that many people recycle because they know it’s better for the environment and because they can do it. But the problem is that these products which have been recycled go to different places: to large dumping sites for stay years there, to incinerators or they could bury underground.

I really don’t know what method is better. If we think in the large dumping of rubbish, we have to make ourselves the questions: and who wants this rubbish? Where did we find an open country? It’s really difficult to find this large place.

Probably, we think that incinerating the rubbish is a good idea because it disappears. But, in fact is the worst, because the incinerator plants produce exhaust fumes such as toxic gases which first are very bad to breath and second, they produce more greenhouse gases which are bad for the planet.

Finally, we have the option of burying the rubbish. But this is also a terrible idea, because the garbage can pollutes the ground and the groundwater.

So, what’s the best way to recycle? And the experts said: reduce and reuse. Then we have another problem we can reuse the glass to do other products, and we can reuse the paper, but and the plastic?

The plastics are elements derivative of the petrol that were born in the nineteenth century and which were discovered thanks to a bet who made a rich factory owner. Plastics have been created because they have good properties to make many products. But, with this discovery, the factories owners began to replace many elements that were made of glass to do them with plastic, because it was more economic.

Now, we find that we live in a world of plastic: packaging, bottles, bags, many parts of a car and even the clothes are made of plastic.

We have reached a point where we wasted many plastics and there's no space to put them in the dumps, so the residues go to the sea. This way, in the Pacific Ocean there has been formed a big island of plastic that has affected many birds and fishes, which have died poisoned; and those who hadn't died poisoned, have eaten the plastic, and we eat them. It's a big chain which sometimes it's better not to think about.

When we saw these appalling images, we ask ourselves: How can we reduce it? The answer is that alone we can’t reduce or make nothing, because now the people who are in the green associations are the ones who one day wanted to discover plastic and had no worrying about the future environment, because they are more interested in the money that they will win. This people have the hypocritical theory of money not the environment.

For this reason, personally I think that I can reduce, recycle and reuse but I can’t do many things to improve the environment. The best way to do it is returning to the past. I mean, in the past there weren’t many elements of plastic, because the packaging and the bottles were made of glass and the clothes were made of wool.

This way, when a person went to buy something at the supermarket, she bought for example a glass bottle of milk, and when she returned to the supermarket she gave the bottle to the cashier. Then, the cahier paid back the money of the glass bottle or she gave to the client another bottle full of milk.

This is a very good way to reuse, but why didn’t we do it? The answer is the same, because the society imposes the fashion, and the fashion is the consumerism.
